Smith Street Motorway Intersection, Gold Coast, QLD
Smith Street Motorway connects Southport to the Pacific Motorway (M1). The upgrade of the intersection was part of a $119 million package to cater for the future traffic needs in the region. The multi-use area has commercial, retail, residential and recreational facilities. The Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct comprising Griffith University, Gold Coast University Hospital and Gold Coast Private Hospital also resides in the area and is serviced by a train station and light rail terminus. The road upgrade with the additional traffic lanes will increase the roads capacity and will also improve traffic flow, road safety and provide better transport connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
Project Design Brief
Widening Smith Street Motorway from four to six lanes created challenges for designers, as they were restricted with the amount of land that could be acquired for the project. Due to the limited amount of space available, the pit and pipe option was eliminated for a robust, compact and cost effective linear drainage solution
