What is ACO StormBrixx®
ACO StormBrixx® is a unique and patented plastic geocellular stormwater management system. Designed for surface water infiltration tanks with high storage capacity, its versatility allows it to be used in applications across all construction environments as a standalone solution or as part of a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD). Step 1: Collection
The process starts above ground, where surface water is captured and guided into the system. The trench drains gather runoff from car parks, driveways and paved areas before directing it into the StormBrixx® underground detention tank.
Step 2: Filtration
Before water moves on, sediment and debris are managed. Treatment devices filter out solids and regulate flow, keeping the system clear and compliant with local standards.
Step 3: Storage
Once water enters the tank, the geocellular modules deliver high storage capacity within a compact footprint. The patented brick-bonding and cross-bonding design holds every unit firmly in place, giving the tank strength under load and lasting stability.
Step 4: Release or infiltration
From here, the tank can be designed to work in three ways. As a detention tank (it discharges water slowly at a controlled rate); a rainwater infiltration tank, (it lets water soak into the soil to reduce runoff or as a retention tank (where water can be pumped out and reused for other purposes).

Frequently Asked Questions
Stormwater detention tanks are underground systems that hold runoff during heavy rain and release it slowly at a controlled rate. By limiting how fast water enters the drainage network, they reduce peak flows and help prevent flooding. In Australia, they’re known as on-site detention (OSD) tanks and usually sit empty between storms.
Infiltration tanks store stormwater runoff underground and allow it to soak into the surrounding soil rather than discharging it into the drainage network. This reduces runoff volume and helps recharge groundwater. Because they rely on permeable ground, a soil assessment is usually carried out before installation.
The difference is what happens to the water. Detention tanks release it slowly into the drainage network, so they sit empty between storms. Retention tanks keep water on site for reuse, evaporation or infiltration. In short, detention controls the rate of runoff, while retention reduces the volume leaving the site.
Both store stormwater temporarily but manage it differently. A detention tank releases it at a controlled rate into the drainage network or local waterways. An infiltration tank lets it soak into the soil, reducing runoff volume. The right choice usually comes down to how well your ground absorbs water.
