Acland Street, St Kilda, VIC
Acland Street is an iconic beachside strip that was rejuvenated to create a large plaza with 330 square metres of public space. Each week, approximately 30,000 passengers catch the Route 96 tram to Melbourne city. Steps were removed in the new development to create a level access to the terminus. The area is now more accessible for pedestrians, wheelchairs, prams and bicycles. The pedestrian-friendly streetscape is an attractive venue for people to shop, dine and enjoy the cultural and musical entertainment.
Project Design Brief
Designers wanted the pavement to be as level as possible. Pedestrian safety issues such as slip resistance and safety for high heels was also a major consideration. Grate security was required due to the large number of bars and restaurants in the precinct.
ACO's Solution

Anti-Slip grates - ACO’s Technical Services Department provided designers with grate intake data to ensure the grate would capture all the rainwater run-off from the flat pavement
Benefits
- The 0.5% slope in the KlassikDrain K100 channel enables pavements to be constructed flat and still provide sufficient fall to the outlet within the channel
- Iron Intercept Heelsafe® Anti-Slip grates met the designer’s slip resistance criteria and the grate design also prevented penetration from high heels
- QuickLok grates secure the grate to the channel and are also easy to remove for maintenance procedures
